OVERVIEW

AIVO View expanded iOttie’s Alexa-enabled automotive ecosystem with a smart dash cam designed around flexibility, connectivity and ease of use. Starting with an open brief, I led the cross-functional team from product definition through design and production, working closely with Amazon to create a cohesive experience across hardware and software.

CHALLENGE

How might we create a dash cam that feels like a natural extension of the AIVO ecosystem?

The brief was intentionally open: create a dash cam that fit within iOttie’s growing ecosystem of Alexa-enabled automotive products.

Working closely with engineering and Amazon, I helped define the product experience and key features, including the mounting system, camera articulation, audio, image quality and Alexa integration. I led the physical design from early exploration through engineering and manufacturing.

MY ROLE

Leading the product from definition to production

As Industrial Design Lead, I coordinated a cross-functional team spanning industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, Amazon Alexa and our manufacturing partner.

Beyond leading the physical design, I helped translate research and technical requirements into the product architecture and feature set, aligned hardware decisions with the Alexa experience, and worked directly with engineering and manufacturing to resolve design and production challenges through launch.

DEFINING THE EXPERIENCE

With a deliberately open brief, we conducted market research, competitive analysis and user interviews to understand how people use dash cams and where the experience could be better. Four key insights emerged and directly informed the product design.

01

FLEXIBILITY MATTERS

Users wanted to be able to quickly rotate the camera to capture the road, car interior or anything around the vehicle.

04

ONE ISN'T ENOUGH

BETTER NIGHT PERFORMANCE

EASY TO REMOVE

Many users wanted to use multiple cameras in the same vehicle to capture different viewpoints.

Low-light performance was a common frustration. Users wanted clearer, more reliable footage at night.

Users wanted a simple way to remove the camera from the vehicle for security, portability or charging.

NIGHT VISION

Clearer footage when it matters most.

MAGNETIC MOUNT

Remove and go. No hassle.

These insights became the foundation for Aivo View, guiding decisions around the mounting system, articulation, multi-camera connectivity, night vision and overall user experience.

CREATING THE PRODUCT

Translating insights into a flexible, connected camera architecture.

VISUAL DIRECTION

Creating a smart device that felt at home in the AIVO ecosystem.

The visual language balanced the softness and approachability of a consumer smart device with the compact, functional requirements of automotive electronics.

FORM EXPLORATION

Finding the right relationship between camera, mount and vehicle.

Early exploration focused on integrating the camera, speaker, mounting system and articulation into a compact form with minimal visual obstruction.

DESIGNING THE ARCHITECTURE

Simple to remove. Precise to position.

02 Magnetic Mounting

Research showed users wanted a quick way to remove the camera without disturbing the mount. I advocated for a magnetic connection paired with a ball joint, creating a system that was easy to remove while still allowing precise positioning.
